Watch: Meet Sergey

Get to know Sergey in this quick spotlight video as he shares what he enjoys about appliance repair, why ice machines are his favorite appliances to diagnose, the compact tools he reaches for every day and the part of the job he values most: meeting and interacting with new people.

His answers give a look at how an experienced technician thinks on the job. For Sergey, the challenge is not just replacing a part. It is understanding how the appliance is supposed to move through each step of its operation and finding the point where that process breaks down.

My Path Into Appliance Repair

I have always enjoyed taking things apart and learning how they work. After high school, I joined a technical program and quickly realized that appliance repair was the right career for me.

I began working in the field in 2011 and have enjoyed the challenge ever since. Every appliance and every service call presents a different problem to solve, which keeps the work interesting.

That interest in how things work is still a big part of how I approach diagnostics today. I like jobs where I have to follow a system through its full sequence, understand what should happen next and use that information to narrow down the real cause of the problem.

What a Service Call With Me is Like

I start by listening carefully so I can fully understand what the customer has been experiencing. I then complete a thorough diagnosis and explain what I find in straightforward terms.

I want homeowners to understand the problem and the available options before moving forward. I also treat every home with respect and clean the work area before I leave.

One of the things I enjoy most is that every appointment also gives me a chance to meet someone new. Good appliance service is technical, but it is also personal. Customers want to know what happened, what can be done and what to expect next, so clear communication matters just as much as the diagnosis.

A Memorable Repair

I once diagnosed an intermittent refrigerator problem that several other companies had been unable to resolve.

After carefully tracing the electrical system, I discovered a small wiring problem behind the control board. The customer was thrilled that the issue had finally been identified, and the experience reminded me why I enjoy this work.

That kind of call is a good example of why I like detailed diagnostics. The symptom can look simple from the outside, but the real cause may only show up after you slow down, follow the sequence and test the system step by step.

Why Ice Machines Are My Favorite Appliance

If I had to pick one appliance to work on, I would choose an ice machine. Ice machines can be a little more complicated because the technician has to understand the entire cycle, not just one component. Depending on the machine, you may be dealing with cube ice, crushed ice, craft ice or another ice style, and each system has its own sequence that has to happen correctly.

That is what makes them interesting to me. You have to watch the cycles, know what should happen at each stage and recognize when the machine falls out of sequence. If you do not understand the full cycle, it is much harder to diagnose the problem correctly. That extra layer of thinking is exactly why I enjoy them. For homeowners and businesses, keeping up with basics like ice machine water filter replacement can also help the system perform the way it was designed to.

The Tools I Reach For Most

One of my favorite tools is a small driver that saves a lot of time when I am working through panels, brackets and all the little screws you find inside appliances. It may not look like the most exciting tool in the bag, but after a full day of service calls, anything that saves time and keeps your wrists from doing the same motion over and over makes a difference.

I also keep another compact tool close by that I like to call “tiny but mighty.” Small tools are useful because appliance repair often means working in tight areas where a full-size tool is harder to control. The best tool is not always the biggest one. It is the one that lets you work accurately, efficiently and without making a simple job harder than it needs to be.

  • Clean condenser coils every 6 months to help your refrigerator run efficiently and release heat properly.
  • Don’t ignore unusual noises. A small sound can be the first sign that a fan, motor or another moving component needs attention.
  • Use the right cookware on your cooktop to help prevent unnecessary wear and get more consistent heating.
  • Pay attention to compressor warning signs like loud buzzing, repeated clicking, excessive heat or poor cooling. These symptoms do not always mean the compressor is bad, but they are worth getting checked before the issue gets worse.

My Favorite Part of the Job

My favorite part of the job is meeting and interacting with people. I meet someone new almost every day, and no two service calls are exactly the same. I enjoy hearing what the customer has been dealing with, figuring out what the appliance is doing and being able to explain the problem in a way that makes sense.

Helping people get their home back to normal is a big part of what makes the work satisfying. And after all that meeting, diagnosing and fixing? I have to admit my second favorite part of the job is getting to go home at the end of the day.

On the Job

From refrigerator compressor diagnostics to ice machine maintenance and everyday appliance service, Sergey’s work covers a wide range of residential and commercial equipment. Here are a few recent looks at him working in the field and explaining the systems behind common appliance problems.

What Customers Are Saying about Sergey

Excellent and fast service. I had my commercial refrigerator repaired by them in March. Something went wrong less than three months later and stopped cooling so called them. They honoured their warranty and came out the next day to repair it. The repair was tangentially related to the first repair and done for free. My thanks to Sergei especially.
